I know I’m late to the party, but I have been playing with papervision3d in as3. Very impressed so far, apart from the 2000 polygon limit as it’s all software rendered.

Great fun though to model, texture bake and import into a 3d flash engine. I use Lightwave3D which has served me well over the years.

Next up is to experiment with importing animated models, and also to use Jiglib the physics-based 3d addon.

Unity3D seems a very exciting alternative as it can make use of actual hardware rendering, and uses javascript for coding which seems fairly similiar to actionscript.

I also threw in some twitter and flickr api integration. I had tried to import and map youtube videos onto 3d surfaces, however the security sandbox errors that were generated using the bitmapdraw method put paid to that. It seems youtube don’t want you manipulating their videos. In the end I used my own flv.
